Wine regions of North America and the Pacific Rim of Canada.
Wine Routes in British Columbia roll from Island Valley’s over vast sea landscapes of the Pacific Northwest Coast Mountains through river canyons to the interiors of the highlands and lowlands of Canada’s premier wine regions. BC’s vineyards and winery estates are some of the northern appellation gems of the Americas. With a very distinguished sense of place, the terroir of British Columbia down to California is crowned by the Coast Mountains and North Cascade Range for its geographical distinction of fertile volcanic soils, the Mediterranean of the Pacific Northwest.
As the birds the fly, the Salish Coast is decorated with old wood forests and sage brush in the Okanagan’s semi dry climate. Hovering over the the 49th and 50th Parallel North, this region of Canada produces new world wines from old and ancient world Vitis vinifera grapevine varietals.
Pinot Gris green grape varietals thrive here in BC with its similar climate of France’s Burgundy region, a style found in most wine cellars along with Chardonnay, Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Viognier, Albariño, and other blends.
Merlot is the black grape varietal choice of growers with its adaptability to varied climates, originating from the seaside port city of Bordeaux, a region in southwestern France along the Garonne River. Bordeaux-style blends like Meritage (blends of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot) are awarded into a class of their own here, along with Syrah, Pinot Noir, Gamay, and other blends.

Like the French, British Columbian Vinters have adopted and established standard labelling for protected growing regions. While grapevines were planted in BC as early as 1907, the modern wine industry took shape in the 1970s and 1980s as wine standards began to establish in quality and recognition, ensuring wines were made from 100% BC-grown grapes, the BC VQA formed in 1990 with continued success in growing Vitis Vinifera varieties within the Province of British Columbia. Protected Geographical and sub-Geographical Indications (GIs) as a Protected Designation of Origin under the BC Vintners Quality Alliance (BC VQA) representing for 100% BC grown grapes for quality and regional assurance.
