From the Okanagan region, Lake Country valley vineyards line the slopes from Vernon to Winfield to Kelowna and Westbank. With plateaus of fruit fields, apple orchards, cherries, peach trees, here is home to some of the first planted vineyards in the Pacific Northwest, a cultivated fruit basket with trails leading north, east, south, and west.

In a quintessential valley of chain lakes and gradually steep slopes, hot aird summers and mild champagne like snowy winters, with highly varied soils, including sandy loam, clay, limestone, glacial till, and eroded bedrock spanning some 250 kilometers. It accounts for the majority of British Columbia’s wine production, with thousands of vineyard acreages strung out over diverse landscapes, unique microclimates, mixed with a continental climate moderated by the depths of Lake Okanagan. Sandy beaches, river bends, laissez-faire

This diversity contributes to distinct wine profiles across sub-regions, a range of wine styles from crisp whites to robust reds and renowned ice wines. Vineyards on high benchlands benefit from well-drained soils, reducing vigor and producing concentrated berries. A region just below the 50th parallel, like Champagne and Rheingau, this continental climate is warmer and drier, a micro pocket desert.

The Okanagan Valley’s wine history began in 1859 when Charles Pandosy, a French priest, planted the first vineyard at the Oblate Mission in Kelowna, these early vines, primarily Vitis labrusca, were intended for sacramental wine. The region’s suitability for grape growing was evident, but commercial viticulture remained limited due to the focus on other crops and the unpredictable shoulder season weather. laissez-faire became the way of life as farming practices improved and varied vines began to bloom.

In French style and fashion, today’s British Columbian Vinters from the Okanagan Valley have established standard growing practices for protected growing regions all over British Columbia. Designated Viticultural Area (DVA) are recognized Protected Geographical and sub-Geographical Indications (GIs) as a Protected Designation of Origin under the BC Vintners Quality Alliance (BC VQA) representing for 100% BC grown grapes for quality and regional assurance. Collaborative Vintages are also noted on bottles between growers and winemakers, ensuring protected designations every harvest.
