Vitis vinifera wines (including many grape varieties, varietà di vino, variedades de vino, cépages, weinsorten) are prized for their complexity and terroir-driven characteristics, each contributing unique flavors, aromas, and textures to wine. Vitis vinifera fruit produces grapes with thin skins, high sugar content, and balanced acidity. With subtle and varied flavours amongst the varieties, a winemakers choice grape for unique nuanced profiles.
Other vine species like Vitis labrusca, native to North Eastern America, produce grapes with thick, slip-skins and a strong distinctive “foxy” (musky) flavor. Notable juice and table grape varieties include Niagara, Catawba, and Concord, made as sweet wines in specific regions. Vitis labrusca wines are often sweeter and less refined, appealing to niche markets.
